How much does Pilates teacher training cost in the UK?

By Sarah, co-founder of The Pilates Programme.

Pilates teacher training in the UK typically costs from a few hundred pounds for a short course to several thousand for a comprehensive programme. The fairer comparison is the all-in cost to certify: the course, the manual, anatomy study, exams and your practice hours. At The Pilates Programme, a Mat, Reformer or Barre course is £2,200 with exams included.

Price is the first question we are asked on calls, so here is the full picture, including the costs that are easy to miss.

What does Pilates teacher training cost at The Pilates Programme?

Each of our Mat, Reformer and Barre teacher training courses costs £2,200. You can pay in full or in 4 interest-free monthly instalments.

If you book any two of Mat, Reformer and Barre together, the total is £3,400, a £1,000 saving, payable in full or over 6 interest-free months. What should the price include?

The price should cover everything you need to sit your exams. When you compare courses, check each of these line by line.

Our course fee includes:

  • 4 in-person practical days for Mat, or 5 for Reformer and Barre, in a small group.
  • HUMAN MOVEMENT: anatomy and physiology, our online course of recorded lectures, manuals and resources.
  • Your training manual, covering execution, cueing, correction, modification and progression for every exercise.
  • An extensive video library for revision.
  • Workshops on programming, inclusive language, classroom management, teaching to music, prenatal guidelines and finding your first job.
  • The exams.

We are proud that there are no hidden fees for manuals or exams. Some providers charge for these separately, which can change the real price a lot.

What extra costs should you budget for?

Beyond the course fee, most students spend a little on their hours and their own practice. Plan for these from the start so nothing comes as a surprise.

Your hours. After the in-person days you complete 30 observation hours, 25 personal study hours and 25 practice teaching hours. Observation can be done on our online platform. For practice, you can book our Altrincham training centre, use your own equipment, or ask a local studio whether you can hire their space. Many students ask the people they practise on to pay a small fee to cover the room.

Travel. Most of our courses run in Altrincham, and around half a dozen a year run elsewhere in the UK and abroad. Budget for travel and, if you need it, somewhere to stay during your in-person days.

Equipment. Mat teachers need very little. If you want equipment at home, our students get a discount on Align Pilates equipment.

Insurance. Once you are certified, you will need your own instructor insurance before you teach paying clients.

Why do Pilates teacher training prices vary so much?

Prices vary because courses differ in length, delivery and depth. A short online course costs less to run than days of in-person coaching in a small group.

When you compare, ask three things: how many days you learn in person, how many students share each trainer, and what is included. Our guide on how to choose Pilates teacher training has the full list of questions.

Is cheaper training a false economy?

Sometimes. A low price can mean a narrow repertoire, little in-person feedback, or fees that appear later for exams and resits. You then pay twice: once for the course, and again to fill the gaps.

The right question is what it costs to become a teacher you are confident putting in front of a class. For most people, that means one course, done properly.
